Campus

Prior to 1925, the school was located on Main Street on the property where now resides "The Center", the recreational center in Springfield. In 1925, the school moved to the former campus of Peoples-Tucker School, which had closed its doors. The school remained on that campus until 1982 when it was moved to Highway 76 East at its present location.

Organization

Springfield High School consists of three main constructions: the main building, the vocational building, and the workout room. In addition, there are several portables located behind the school.

The main building is divided into four separate halls (A, B, C, and D).

A-Hall contains computer classes, some mathematics classes, the library, and the Guidance Department, and leads to the cafeteria.

B-Hall contains the History Department, the Social Sciences Department, some of the Art Department, and the English Department, in addition to most of the Foreign Language Department and the Newspaper Room.

C-Hall contains the Art Department, the Music Department, the Agricultural Department, some of the Culinary Arts Department, some of the Foreign Language Department, and the Special Education Department.

D-Hall contains the Science Department and the Mathematics Department, in addition to most of the Technological Department.

The Vocational Building contains Shop classes and the Culinary Department, along with other technical departments.

Renovations

Efforts to expand the school, merging the main and vocational buildings, began in early 2007. Among the additions to the school will be a multi-story extension of B-Hall, a new Lecture Hall, a new gymnasium, and new offices. Construction were finished for the 2009-2010 school year.

Sports

The football team began in 1911 under the direction of Leroy Sheppard. The greatest coach in SHS history is the legendary W. Boyce Smith. Boyce Smith coached from 1928-1971 and compiled a record of 288-166-34 [1][2](a winning percentage of 69.6%). The football stadium (Boyce Smith Field) is named for him. Construction began in 1937 at the site of the old Peoples-Tucker school football field, turned to face east-west instead of north-south, and completely constructed and finished by Coach Smith and his team. It was dedicated November 11, 1939.

The 1993 version of the Yellow Jacket football team won the TSSAA state championship in Class 3A, defeating McMinn Central 28-6 at Vanderbilt Stadium, and finishing with a record of 13-2. That team was coached by Randy Thomas, an ex-player of Coach Smith's.

On February 6, 2009, Kelly Myers was hired as the 14th football coach in Yellow Jacket history.

The boys' basketball team is coached by John Darden, an alumnus of SHS, and former player of Coach Gene Beck. Darden had a sterling career, not only as a Jacket, but at the University of Tennessee, where he played during the "Ernie and Bernie" era (denoting Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King). Darden was known during his senior year at SHS as the "Springfield Rifle". He was coached in college by Ray Mears and Don DeVoe.

The girls' basketball team is coached by Gerlonda Hardin, an alumnus at the school, who garnered All-OVC and OVC Freshman of the Year (2000-01) honors in her days at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, where she played for Susie Gardner. She also garnered OVC Tournament MVPs in 2002 and 2004. She was voted OVC Female Athlete of the Year in 2004.<http://www.apsugovernors.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=16900&ATCLID=205160157>
